Why the Practice of Silence Calms the Nervous System

Most people don’t run out of things to say.

They run out of the energy it takes to keep responding, reading the room, softening what they say, reassuring someone before they’ve even asked, staying alert to what the moment needs from them. By the end of an ordinary day, the tiredness rarely comes from the conversation itself. It comes from managing it.

The women who arrive at Casa Anandi are exhausted, and most know it. They haven’t slept properly in years. What’s underneath the sleep loss, in almost every case, is a shortage of stillness: hours, sometimes days, where nothing is required of them at all. Which is why every retreat includes a full day of Mauna, the Sanskrit term for the practice of silence, and why it is consistently the day that changes the most.

Silence as a diagnostic

Mauna is often mistaken for simply not speaking. It is closer to a removal of the requirement to perform, explain or resolve anything for anyone else. For one day, there is nothing to attend to but your own system.

What tends to surface first is restlessness, sometimes irritability, occasionally grief, rarely calm. That’s the first accurate read most people have had in years of how much of their day is usually spent managing everyone else’s experience of them.

Silence is a form of rest from something specific: conversation, expectation, and the constant requirement to respond.

What the nervous system does with the quiet

There’s good physiological reason for this. In a 2006 study published in the journal Heart, cardiologist Luciano Bernardi tested how the body responds to music with short pauses of silence built between passages. The music raised heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate. The pauses dropped all three below baseline, further than the music had raised them in the first place. The silence did more regulatory work than the sound.

Chronic compensation is the low-grade, constant output of managing other people, reading rooms, staying useful. It keeps the sympathetic nervous system mildly but continuously activated. It looks like ordinary functioning, which is exactly why it goes unnoticed for so long. The system doesn’t distinguish between the effort of a genuine crisis and the effort of thirty years spent being the reliable one in every room. Both draw on the same account.

Silence is one of the few instructions the nervous system reliably follows to come off that account. It removes the specific input, other people’s needs, that has been keeping the system switched on.

The cost of constant response

Most of the depletion I see isn’t dramatic. It isn’t burnout in the collapse sense. It’s the accumulated tax of being available: answering before you’ve thought, soothing before you’ve felt it yourself, holding a room so no one else has to. This is compensation, easily mistaken for connection because it often looks like care from the outside.

The tax is invisible because it’s constant. There’s no single moment that costs too much. There are thirty years of moments that never got to cost nothing.

Why we resist it

If silence regulates the system this reliably, the obvious question is why people avoid it. The answer is that silence reveals the size of the compensation. Once the requirement to respond is lifted, the gap between what you’ve been carrying and what actually needed carrying becomes obvious, and that’s uncomfortable to sit with.

So the space gets filled instead, with input, with checking in, with being needed. Rest is wanted. It’s just that noticing how much energy has gone into managing everyone else is harder to sit with than the tiredness itself.

There’s early evidence the nervous system does more with quiet than simply settle. In a 2013 study, researchers found that in adult mice, extended exposure to silence, more than to any of the auditory stimuli tested, including music, was associated with increased growth of new cells in the hippocampus, the brain region tied to memory and emotional regulation (Kirste et al., 2013). It’s animal research, and the leap to human application should be made carefully. But it points in the same direction as the cardiovascular findings: silence has a measurable effect on the system.

Why we build a day of it into every retreat

On retreat, Mauna day removes the one thing most of the women in the room have never been without: the obligation to chat, to compensate, to manage everyone else’s experience of the moment. Nobody has to ask if you’re alright. Nobody needs managing. For one day, the only system that requires attention is your own.

It is rarely comfortable in the first hours. By the second half of the day, most people describe something closer to relief than boredom. It’s the specific relief of realising how much energy they’d been spending on something they never chose and had stopped noticing.
