Can’t Switch Off at Night? Why the Nervous System Takes Time to Unwind
The Unwinding, Takes Time
On the timeline the nervous system actually keeps.
You do not get to wind down in a single evening. The nervous system does not honour that timeline. If you have spent years pulling yourself tighter — the late nights, the over-delivery, the silent agreements with everyone but yourself — you cannot expect ten minutes of quiet to undo it. The body is not impressed by good intentions. It tracks duration.
This is what most people get wrong about meditation. They sit, the mind is loud, and they conclude it isn’t working. The mind being loud is the work. The noise is the system noticing, often for the first time in years, that nothing is being asked of it. That noticing alone takes time. The quiet comes later, on its own schedule, not yours.

Think of a shoelace tied hard against itself. You cannot yank it open. The faster you pull, the more it tightens. You have to slow down enough to see how the knot was made. A wired nervous system is the same. The threads were laid down quietly, in daily increments. Some five years ago. Some fifty. They will loosen the way they were tightened — with patience, with attention, not with force.
Three things are required.
The body will not be rushed by anyone, including you.
You cannot release what you have not yet understood.
The unwinding will not move at the speed of your ambition.
The reframe most people miss: the wired state is not the problem. It is the evidence. It is the body keeping an honest record of every yes you did not mean, every signal you talked yourself out of, every place you decided rest had to be earned. The work is not to suppress the wiring. It is to listen to what it has been telling you all along.
The wired state is not the problem. It is the evidence.
A fix is fast. It also does not hold. Stabilising the system is slower. It is also the only thing that lasts.
The measure is not how quickly the mind quiets. It is your willingness to stay long enough to understand what made it loud in the first place.
